Run With U (Azerbaijan 2025)

Mamagama's Run With U, representing Azerbaijan, is up next!

(Side note before we begin - I did NOT expect "Mamagama" to be that much of a tongue twister. I kept getting it every other way except the right way. Magamaga? Mamagaga? Magamama? Magagama? But no, nothing's wrong with their name. My tongue is just weird.)

... also, I swear I've heard this accompaniment before. It sounds SO familiar. That chord progression, anyway. I can't think of what song it is right now, but I'll know when I hear it. It's kinda... I don't know, Coldplayish? Maroon5ish?

Edit: So apparently, I was thinking of Maroon 5's Lucky Strike.

Love song (of a sort). Automatic 5/10 unless done well or poorly.

I actually don't mind the lyrics. They really bring out the chill yet fun vibe that the music feels like it's going for. It's not melodramatic, not a piney whiny mess, and "I wanna run with you" is actually a pretty fun way of asking for a date (lmao). The rhymes are pretty simple, but they do what they need to. And again, the scene painting is right there, with "shadows in the neon light / the night is young, the beat is tight". A relaxed club environment, maybe?

The only line I find a little weird is "play wrong till it's right". Grammatical issues aside, what is "playing wrong" in this context, and why would it even be necessary?

It's quite okay. It might be a little generic, but it gets to the point quickly, it feels nice and chill, it does what it's supposed to do.

COMPOSITION - Total: 14/20 (70%)
Melody/Bass: 4/5
Instrumentation: 4/5
Development: 2.5/5
Coherence: 3.5/5

I'm in two minds about that post-chorus instrumental. It really gives the feeling of running with someone into the night - not running because someone's chasing you or because you're doing something you know you shouldn't be doing but just running for the hell of it. And/or because you're having fun. And the saz (from what I can find online) really makes it feel very light on its feet. That said I didn't expect the title of the song ("Run With U") to feel quite so literal (it doesn't feel like a metaphorical "running in the same circles" kinda thing, or a, y'know, sex[y] related thing). The subversion of expectation yet still keeping to the theme... hmm. I think I'm coming down on the side of it being better rather than worse.

Developmentally, though, the song doesn't feel like it progresses much. The verses and chorus remain the same, and although there's some variation in the instruments, the "Shadows in the neon lights" section does major overtime work in making the song not feel repetitive, especially since it comes in the first half. Thankfully, the song doesn't feel long and doesn't feel like it's outstaying its welcome.

... this one feels kinda rough, not gonna lie. I can't tell if he's singing in falsetto or a strange sort of head voice, but I'm pretty sure there were a few obvious bum notes, his voice doesn't feel very strong, and some of the notes were a bit... short? He was kinda flat in the beginning. It got better later on around the first chorus, but... well... first impressions count. And overall while I don't think it was that bad, it certainly wasn't good either.

STAGING - Total: 11/25 (44%)
The Show: 5/10
The Story: 3/10
Outfits: 3/5

... what the hell was that? Why is everything RED? Why is nothing like in the music video?

I mean, they certainly aren't obligated to bring their music video to life, but the chill vibe of the song is totally at odds with the RED FIRE RED FIRE FIRE RED aspect of the performance. I wanted to see blue, I wanted to see yellow, maybe a little bit of pinks and purples and reds in neon. There was none of that. The shadow people in the background worked to make the place feel a little more crowded, but it was giving more "burning in hell" than "partying at a club".

Not just that. The song is so dynamic! IMO that instrumental section is the most important bit of the song, because it's a place for the SOUL of the song to shine. It should encapsulate the spirit of the song (the instrumental does it quite well), yet the staging does nothing to capture it! I don't like that they're just standing/walking around. That energy doesn't match the song!

At least what they're wearing isn't terrible. Leather kinda makes sense. Black, though. Against a sea of red. Nothing to really make it pop.

I... wow.

I'm sorry. But nothing in here makes me want to run with you. And looking back at the scores I've just given, 3/10 seems too high for the story.

Song was cool. Pity the staging and the singing didn't live up to its promise.
